“99.7%.”
For Tom Brady, the number represented the win probability against the New England Patriots during Super Bowl LI, when the team trailed the Atlanta Falcons 28-3 late in the third quarter before ultimately mounting the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.
The lesson? Even when the odds seem impossible, preparation, resilience, and perseverance matter.
“You’re going to find yourself on the short end of that 99.7%, wondering how you got there,” Brady told graduates. “The only time you’re sure to lose is when you quit.”
Drawing on lessons from his career, Brady challenged graduates to seek out difficult opportunities, embrace adversity, and continue pushing forward when things don’t go according to plan.
Brady was introduced by Egon Durban, co-CEO and managing partner of Silver Lake Technology Management, whose recent gift established the Durban Sports Business Program at Georgetown McDonough. During the ceremony, Brady also received a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from Georgetown University.
Congratulations to the 383 graduates of the undergraduate Class of 2026 as they begin the next chapter of their journeys. Hoya Saxa! 🎓
