GDS’s Community Engagement and Experiential Learning Department (CEEL) presents the 2025 Policy Institute tracks! Currently in its 11th year, the GDS Policy Institute is an incubator for activism and the CEEL team is excited to extend an invitation to the program this year to students around the DMV!
For four weeks, High School Fellows will learn about pressing social justice issues of global and/or national importance by working with advocates, engaging in direct conversation with policymakers, traveling to “ground zero” cities where the focus issue is most prevalent, and building relationships with individuals at the heart of the issue.
Applications will be going live next Tuesday on January 21, 2025, so please keep an eye out for those. In the meantime, follow the Policy Institute on Instagram () to stay engaged!

On the last day of school before the winter break, 6th graders presented their parents, grandparents, and faculty with their Box Projects: an annual project that involves the collecting of personal, family and ancestral artifacts that tell the story of the students' families, artfully arranged and displayed along with essays that narrate the meaning and significance of the items inside.
It is a gratifying, endearing, heartfelt and joyous experience that unites family and builds community.

When GDS third graders interview our first-generation immigrant faculty and staffers as part of the annual Immigration project, they gain powerful insights into the meaning of home, hope, and connection to place. Their interviews turn into colorful displays that celebrate the details of their interviewee’s stories and a finale presentation complete with some culturally relevant food samplings.
