Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of bringing a group of students to talk at PeaceCon, the biggest peace conference in the world! This was their first opportunity to share their stories (and excellent research) on women's movements for peace and democracy in North-East Syria, pushing back ISIS fighters; in India, creating all-women justice systems for survivors of sexual assault; in Colombia, human rights defenders advocating for the inclusion of LGBTQAI+ populations in the peace process; in Israel and Palestine, women reaching across divides to support one another; and in South Africa, women using art to reclaim their agency. These are stories we don't often see in the mainstream media. If we don't have a feminist lens we don't have a holistic view of conflict and peace, and the courageous leadership roles women play in supporting their communities to end violence and build safety and security for everyone.

How Feminism Saved Me | Shirley Graham | TEDxFoggyBottom 02/20/2024

Dear friends, I posted last year that I gave a TEDx talk in D.C. ....drum roll...well, here it is for you to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d_m77WhwEw
Due, to some administrative glitch behind the scenes it was delayed in publication. Anyway, in the talk I make the link between gender equality and peace and security and the powerfully positive role that feminism has played in my life both personally and professionally. The theme of the TEDx event was 'origin stories' so that's the reason why I share some of my own personal struggles. It is a 20 minute talk, a little longer than usual, so make a cuppa and enjoy! If you feel that this talk is 'an idea worth sharing' actually more than an idea, its main argument is backed up by over 100 data sets, then please give it a thumbs up, leave a comment, and share on the TEDx/Youtube platform, that way it will reach a wider audience. Thanks so much! 😊🙏

This course offers a theoretical, as well as a practical thematic examination of the relevance of the concepts of gender and gender equality to understanding peace, armed conflict, international security and peacebuilding. Feminist IR theory is the critical frame for the class, with substantive coverage of masculinities theory and approaches. The seminar thematically covers issues such as: gendered conceptions of nationhood; militarization, combatancy, and demobilization of armed actors; wartime violence and harm; peace processes; post-war reconstruction and transitional justice. Classes will also cover the emergence of legal and normative frameworks adopted by the UN system to address these issues. A number of case study contexts globally will feature in thematic classes. Classes are run on an active discussion-basis and full participation of students is expected.

Tahina Montoya is a Multi-lingual, International Affairs Strategist & Women, Peace and Security Expert with experience working at the tactical, operational and strategic levels both nationally and internationally. She has experience leading over a dozen humanitarian missions around the world (Tanzania, Nicaragua, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, and Panama) and organizing efforts to better integrate women into the armed forces, including through more equitable human resource policies and by working on issues of family planning and emergency convenient care.
