Applications are now open for 826DC’s Youth Writers in Residence program for high school students.

Students in grades 9-12 will develop an independent writing project, build leadership skills, and earn community service hours or a stipend.

Priority enrollment will be given to students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

📣 We’re hiring at 826DC!

Do you love working with young people and believe in the power of their words and ideas? We’re looking for two Program Assistants to join our team and help bring 826DC’s free writing programs to students across Washington, DC.

Program Assistants will support our in-school programs and After-School Writing Lab, helping young writers strengthen their skills, explore their creativity, and share their voices.

826 founder Dave Eggers joined Armchair Expert to discuss the origins of the 826 movement. During the episode, he shared how 826 Valencia was founded, why publishing young people’s writing became a central part of the organization’s mission, and how the 826 model expanded to include sites such as 826LA and a national network of youth writing centers like ours at 826DC.

He emphasized the role of writing, publishing, and creative communities in supporting young people, reflecting 826’s mission to help students develop their writing skills, amplify their voices, and share their stories with the world.
