This “engineering and…” mindset drives GW Engineering to partner with other GW schools and colleges and with companies and government agencies around DC and the world to connect engineering to other disciplines and to responsibly translate innovations to society. GW Engineering offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees from 6 academic departments: Biomedical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Engineering Management & Systems Engineering, and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. In addition to providing technical depth, our academic programs curate “engineering and…” learning experiences for our students, such as courses and projects with other schools across campus, research experiences in our state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Hall laboratories, internships and jobs at companies and government agencies around the globe, innovation and entrepreneurial experiences in the GW Innovation Center, and study abroad programs with our many international partners. GW Engineering also offers several successful online graduate programs, which primarily serve working professionals. What does undergraduate research look like at GW Engineering?

For Anya Spevacek and Will Carr, it means spending the summer designing and testing a device that could help make draining fluid from around the heart more accessible and effective, including in rural areas and other settings outside traditional hospitals.

Their work is one of many projects supported by GW Engineering’s Summer Undergraduate Program for Engineering Research (SUPER), which provided research opportunities to 20 students across all six of our departments this summer.

From medical devices and robotics to aerodynamics and resilient food systems, our students aren’t waiting until after graduation to tackle real-world challenges.

The first week of classes is just the beginning. ⚙️

At GW Engineering, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through organizations like the GW chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), students can put what they’re learning into practice! Along the way, they’re building more than technical skills. They’re gaining experience in leadership, collaboration, problem-solving, and turning ideas into impact.

As a new semester begins, we encourage our students to explore everything GW Engineering has to offer. You never know where saying “yes” to a new opportunity might take you.

Computer science doctoral students and co-authors Saad Mankarious and Iyad Ait Hou, advised by CS Assistant Professor Aya Zirikly and Professor Rebecca Hwa, earned the Best Poster Award at the 2026 annual meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics!

Their study explores intergroup communication online, revealing how members of ADHD and autism communities on Reddit adapt their linguistic styles to accommodate one another when interacting across groups.

For GW Engineering alumni James Messina and Maria Pozo, hands-on research opportunities led to groundbreaking work, competitive Ph.D. programs, and innovations advancing healthcare.

James discovered his passion for therapeutic ultrasound in Professor Vesna Zderic's lab before pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Maria joined Professor Emilia Entcheva's lab at GW, where she earned a competitive NIH award while researching the cardiac effects of emerging therapies.

Their advice to current students? Get involved in a lab early.

Congratulations to Ekundayo Sh*ttu, chair and professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at GW Engineering, on being elected a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

This prestigious honor recognizes Sh*ttu's contributions to systems modeling, healthcare technologies, and energy systems, as well as his commitment to translating research into patented innovations that improve decision-making and solve real-world challenges.
