A barren concrete pad at a Clay County, West Virginia, high school is now a “blue-green” wellness space, created through a collaboration between Georgetown faculty and graduate nursing students, and local high schoolers. New research finds that youth-led environmental design can foster a unique form of “Situated Strength.”

Students report better emotional regulation, stronger resilience, and a deeper sense of belonging, thanks to a space they helped design themselves. As lead researcher, Melody Wilkinson noted, “As a clinician, it challenges us to recognize that some of the most meaningful impacts on health may happen outside the clinic — through connection, environment, and experiences as simple as building something together.”
