“It just seemed a very natural thing to do.”
That’s how former William & Mary President Timothy J. Sullivan ’66 described the decision to establish a W&M presence in D.C. over 25 years ago.
A lot has changed since then, but the mission remains remarkably familiar.
Long before universities across the country began building D.C. centers, internship and applied learning hubs, and pathways into public service, W&M saw an opportunity to bring its community closer to the people, institutions, and ideas shaping our world.
These photos capture the Center’s earliest days. Today, that vision has grown into a year-round home for applied learning, alumni engagement, thought leadership, and community in the nation’s capital.
The Center was founded on a simple belief: students learn differently when they are immersed in the places where decisions are made, organizations are built, and public life unfolds.
As we celebrate 25 years, we’re looking back at the people, places, and moments that helped shape W&M in Washington.
Which detail in these photos takes you right back to the early 2000s?

Why the W&M Washington Center with
“I decided to come to the Washington Center to explore career paths beyond the classroom, and it’s been a rewarding experience! I’ve really enjoyed my internship and the chance to build new skills while meeting people who share similar career goals. The courses also feature city trips and sessions with influential guest speakers, creating valuable opportunities to learn directly from leaders in their fields. In my free time here, I enjoy cooking, painting, and exploring DC—especially walking around the National Mall or trying new restaurants with friends. If someone visits for the day, I’d take them to Ebenezers Coffeehouse, the fall PorchFest, and walk along the Anacostia River.”
Sophia is a Junior at W&M pursuing a bachelor’s degree in International Relations with a minor in Geospatial Analysis. She is interning with the National Association of Regional Councils.

Why the W&M Washington Center with
“My decision to apply to the W&M Washington Center was completely on a whim, something very abnormal for me. When I was accepted to the program, my decision came down to the pro and con list hanging next to my bed. My entire summer was spent worrying about whether or not this was a good decision, but all of those worries melted away once I got to the city. There are so many things to do here, but my favorite is just to go for walks and explore. I am so happy with my choice to come to the Washington Center. I have made wonderful friends here, I have been able to see this beautiful city, and I have had the amazing opportunity to intern on the Hill. If I had to go back and make this decision again, I would absolutely choose to Study in D.C.”
