Brain Rewiring Enables Multitasking - School of Medicine - Georgetown 06/08/2026

🧠 Your brain can learn to truly multitask.

New research by Georgetown scientists discovered that with enough practice, your brain rewires itself, moving learned tasks from the decision-making prefrontal cortex to the more automatic temporal cortex. The result? Your "thinking" brain stays free to handle something else entirely.

Think of it like driving: when you first learn, you can't do anything else. Years later, you can hold a conversation and more without having to focus completely on operating the vehicle. That's your brain upgrading its own wiring.

The findings could help explain expert intuition, shed light on compulsive habits, and even guide the next generation of AI.

This April, alumni, university leaders, faculty, and friends of Georgetown gathered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for John Carroll Weekend 2026.

A highlight of the weekend was Called to Heal: Faith, Service, and Global Health, a thought-provoking conversation exploring how medicine, policy, and service intersect to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

Moderated by Norman J. Beauchamp Jr., MD, MHS, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, the panel examined how interdisciplinary collaboration, global governance, and Georgetown’s Jesuit values are shaping efforts to advance health equity around the world.

Featured panelists included:

🔹 Ronald A. Mercier, S.J. – Provincial of the Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus

🔹 Nalini Anand, JD, MPH – Managing Director, Georgetown Global Health Institute

🔹 Matthew S. Kavanagh, PhD – Director, Center for Global Health Policy & Politics; Associate Professor of Global Health and Visiting Professor of Law

Thank you to our panelists for sharing their insights and inspiring us to continue answering the call to serve.

We hope to see many more of our medical alumni at John Carroll Weekend 2027 in San Diego, April 1 - 4!

Innovating for Mental Healthcare - School of Medicine - Georgetown 06/01/2026

On May 20, community-driven mental health organizations gathered for a solutions fair hosted by the Innovation Hub at the Thrive Center for Children, Families, and Communities, where fellows showcased solutions designed to support children and families through early childhood development, including expanding access to mental healthcare and disability services. From virtual treatment programs for justice-involved teens to AI-powered tools helping overwhelmed new parents, the solutions presented highlighted the innovation and lived experience that comes with academic research and institutional support. “It’s really wonderful the ideas that come out of academia, but a lot of more wonderful ideas come out of communities around the country and around the world,” said the Thrive Center’s director, Matthew Biel, MD, MSc, professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine and chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. “This is a chance for us to learn from really innovative thinkers and also to apply our expertise to problem-solvers who are really in the trenches.” Learn more about the event at https://medicine.georgetown.edu/news-stories/georgetown-program-connects-community-innovators-with-mental-health-research-and-resources/

The White Coat Ceremony - Medical Education 05/29/2026

In August, we will officially welcome the School of Medicine Class of 2030 as they begin their journey to physicianship. One of the most exciting moments of their first week is when students don their first white coats at the White Coat Ceremony, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to healing, compassion, and service. Traditionally, School of Medicine deans and faculty members cloak students in their first white coat as a symbol of the trust being bestowed upon them to carry on the noble tradition of doctoring.
