Just wrapped up keynoting for the National Association of Government Communicators Communications School speaking to Public Information Officers from federal agencies, state agencies, and Indian reservations.

One of the biggest mistakes communicators make?

Saying:
“Here’s what we know…”

without also saying:
“Here’s what we DON’T know yet and here’s what we’re doing to bridge the gap.”

Why does this matter?

Because the brain HATES open loops.

The second people hear:
“Here’s what we know…”

they subconsciously wonder:
“What aren’t you telling us?”

That tiny language shift can either create trust…
or accidentally create anxiety.

More tips coming from the stage today on crisis communication, leadership under pressure, body language, and the neuroscience of trust.

And I’m wondering if you know a leader, spokesperson, or communicator who could benefit from this because words shape nervous systems.
