It was a particularly fun morning at River today! With our 'Read Across River' event, we celebrated our love for books, storytelling and reading. Teachers, Arts & Sciences Faculty, Teaching Assistants and Community Buddies sparked the children's imaginations by reading aloud their favorite stories. We had some amazing book characters come to life as well!

Today is Int'l Cochlear Implant Day, honoring the first cochlear implant done 65+ years ago. This is a celebratory day for River, as some community members have hearing loss and depend on these devices and hearing aids for access to sound!

Looking for summertime fun for children ages 3-Grade 4? Look no further than Camp River, held June 24 - August 2 (no camp week of July 1)! We still have space, but don't delay. Register today:

Check out our counselor preparation track for Grades 5+.

Our Grade 4 students welcomed speakers from the organization Homes Not Borders to River to learn about the lived experiences of people who migrated to the US from all over the world. The discussion was in preparation for one of the students' Field Studies where they will help set up an apartment for a refugee family. The children were well prepared with many thoughtful questions!

As River heads off for Winter Recess, we hope everyone gets some time to hibernate, rejuvenate and appreciate the ones you love!

We put out a call to all our 'mathletes' last week for our Family Math Event, and the crowd seemed to multiply exponentially during the evening as they engaged in fun brain games and friendly competition. Everyone got to flex their math muscles in the gym, and some left happily with prizes in hand!

Somewhere over the rainbow lies a magical place for joyful learning, due in part to our thematic curriculum which provides a play-based, child-centered and cohesive context for learning, and inspires vocabulary development, experimentation, problem solving and the ability to make connections between different academic areas!

Stephen Pastis, lawyer-turned-cartoonist, children's author and creator of syndicated comic strip Pearls Before Swine, visited River today for an interactive and engaging talk with our 4th and 5th graders. The students were fascinated to learn about what sparked his interest in drawing and telling stories that both help and amuse young readers, such as his latest novel, Looking Up. What a great morning!

Our River Rapids team, comprised of our mighty fourth and fifth graders, took the field for an inaugural interscholastic soccer match last week. With a final score of 3-3, the athletes and coaches could not have been happier, and it marked a great start to our season!

Phenomenal weather for our festive Field Day this morning. Think this may have been our biggest crowd of spectators yet. Mr. Harris and team couldn't pull this off without our family volunteers to help set-up, clean-up, cheer and coach activities!

Our Children Are Citizens Celebration of Learning was a highlight of the school year! This program, created by Harvard's Project Zero, stems from the premise that all children are current citizens—not future or hypothetical ones—with ideas, opinions and the capacity to participate in the civic and cultural life of their city. After a standing-room-only presentation by River Curriculum Director Christiane Connors, the 8 participating classes (Preschool-Grade 1) excitedly shared their concepts and work with their families, including a root cause analysis of kindness, accessible playground designs and an exploration of what makes a community healthy. The teachers guided such beautiful and creative responses to the question, "What does being a good citizen and community member mean to you?"

Our talented fourth graders selected a well-known artist (past or present) and researched their life and work. As part of the lesson, they created these impressive collage portraits! Do you recognize the artists not labeled?

Skip the crowds down at the Mall and take in River's own little Cherry Blossom Festival, as envisioned by our Preschool artists.

Ahoy, Broadway, some buccaneers may be headed your way! Congratulations to our Grades 2 & 3 classes for their spirited performance this week. Mr. James, River's fabulous drama teacher, led the charge in bringing River's rendition of "Pirates the Musical" to life.

Know thyself! A fun, school-wide project, we had each student create a self-portrait which helps to deepen self-concept and express creativity. At River, we strive to have everyone see themselves as artists and valued members of a community rich with many identities.

Grades 3 & 4 were invited to spend a Sunday morning with their parents at the KID Museum, where Grade 4 will enjoy scheduled blocks of learning time throughout the school year, studying coding, electrical engineering, robotics, technical design, and more. Thanks to all who could join the fun!

River's founding 4th graders hosted a special guest this week in their Studio Space during Drama -- Playwright, Director, Dramaturg and Theatre Educator Katie Keddell! She'll work with the class to create an original play they'll perform in December.
