October 25, 2016 by Maha Bali I am working on a project (outside my institution, targeting adult learners), and was asked to provide tips for effective online learning. I expected to find good, concise, accessible ones out there already. There are (well, I only looked at this, this, and this), but I felt they were missing something, so here are mine. By Harrison Keller OCTOBER 23, 2016 A few years ago, discussions about the future of online learning reflected a mix of breathless enthusiasm and anxiety. Now, things seem to have settled down. While online enrollments are increasing, the numbers and associated revenue have been growing much more slowly than advocates had hoped for. Predictions about the end of college notwithstanding, the vast majority of online courses and degrees are still being delivered by traditional colleges rather than alternative providers. I was so grateful to have the opportunity to be part of the Council for Independent College's CIC Internship as only a sophomore. During this short three-week session, I was able to study Herodotus’ Histories at a more in-depth level than I had in the past. The purpose of this seminar was to provide professors from different disciplines an expansion in their knowledge of Herodotus and the Greek world while also giving them ideas for how to incorporate this work into their future classes. I have been so blessed to intern at the Center for Hellenic Studies’ while they hosted the Council of Independent College's (CIC) seminar on Herodotus. As a seminar intern, I was able to communicate with professionals from many academic concentrations, help ‘behind the scenes’ of the seminar, and work with a professional organization. Most importantly, I got the chance to learn more about ancient Greek history, which is extremely helpful for me in my studies. [ 385 more words. ]

The Center for Hellenic Studies would like to extend their greatest thanks and appreciation to all of those who participated in this summer’s Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) seminar. This summer participants worked their way through the nine books of Herodotus’ Histories while also reading secondary literature in order to present these texts to students across the nation. 1§1 A study of Seneca’s rhetoric needs no apology. He has been called one of the “greatest writers of Latin prose in (or perhaps any) period.”[1] The influence of his father, our source for the controversiae and suasoriae—practice speeches composed for the training of politicians and lawyers during the late Republic and early Empire—coupled with natural ability produced a model stylist much emulated and at times harshly criticized. Written by Rebecca Morris 1§1 Jonathan Z. Smith writes, “The historian’s task is to complicate, not to clarify.” Although Petronius is not a historian but a Roman author of the Neronian Age, his fictional work, The Satyricon, adds complexity to his literary figures and their historical functions in Roman society. Detailed knowledge of the author himself, the social setting of his writing and the spectrum of Neronian literature, and the meaning of his text illuminate his main character, Trimalchio, as a complex Roman freedman. July 22, 2016 by Fernanda Zamudio-Suaréz The U.S. Department of Education is proposing further regulations for online-education programs at colleges and universities, the department said in a news release on Friday. The department’s new regulations, which follow rules that took effect last summer, would make state-authorization requirements, which vary by state, more clear for institutions that offer online courses. Among the most notable changes, colleges that offer online courses would have to be authorized by each state in which they enroll students, if the states require such authorization.
