🚨Calling educators who work in WIDA states with English language learners (ELLs) in grades 1–12 at all proficiency levels! CAL is recruiting for the WIDA ACCESS Writing Tryouts. The last day to apply is October 15!
Tryouts are an opportunity for educators and students to be part of the development of new WIDA ACCESS Writing tasks. Educators and students who participate help make sure new tasks work as intended before tasks go to large-scale field testing. Tryouts also give students a chance to practice completing WIDA ACCESS Writing tasks.

As Science of Reading requirements continue to shape literacy instruction across the country, one question deserves more attention: 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴?

CAL’s research has found that multilingual learners are often absent or minimally addressed in state literacy legislation. Yet implementing evidence-based reading instruction well for MLs requires attention to the full picture of literacy development, including 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀, 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 students already bring to the classroom.

That intersection is exactly what we’ll explore in our upcoming CAL Literacy: Comprehensive Approach to Literacy Instruction Institute.
