The Center for Advancing Trauma Informed Care for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children is hiring a part-time Research Support Specialist. This position is a great opportunity to obtain research and clinical experience.

Nthabeleng MacDonald (class of 2024 and a rock star Psychology major) just accepted an internship offer in Research Experiences for Deaf Students in Systems Biology and Molecular Signaling "How Cells and Organisms make Decisions" REU Program for the Summer Term of 2021 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK)! She will be conducting one of the individual research projects mentored by one of 13 faculty laboratories.

HAND WAVES to Nthabeleng! Let's celebrate!

Dear Students and Faculty of the Psychology Department,

We are reaching out as faculty to acknowledge and denounce the increased levels of racism and violence directed towards Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Island individuals and their communities in this country. The hostile rhetoric about the Asian communities throughout the pandemic has put members of Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Island people in this country in danger and at risk of attack; and it is only the most recent manifestation of a long history of Asian and Asian American scapegoating in the United States that goes back to the 19th century.

As students, trainees, faculty, and psychologists, we must continue to work towards acknowledging the significant mental, emotional, and physical toll such beliefs, attitudes, and acts can have on the well-being of Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Island people in this country, at Gallaudet, and in our programs. We also must continue to find ways to join together to better understand and address these issues of racism, xenophobia, and violence. By coming together and being part of the needed change, we can facilitate increased respect, equity, and safety for these communities.

In these times, it is critical to reflect on Gallaudet’s mission and commitment to equity and inclusion. These principles compel us to challenge behaviors that demean, marginalize, and exclude others, and to take steps forward to make our community and the wider world a safer place. TraciAnn Hoglind is the Title II ADA Coordinator with the Division of Disability Rights for the City and County of Denver. Her responsibility is to evaluate, enforce, and educate about the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure equitable access for all people with disabilities.
Prior to joining the Mile High City, she was politically appointed as the Policy and Communications Manager for Maryland Governor's Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. TraciAnn's previous positions included Health and Disability Fellow for the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) and Health Access Project Specialist at the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
TraciAnn is also the founder of Health Signs Center, a nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting equitable health for the deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and hard of hearing community. Health Signs Center shares public health educational resources on Facebook and Instagram (), collaborates with experts, organizations and businesses to create communication dissemination materials and projects, and conducts a nationwide COVID-19 research study to develop deaf-inclusive policy initiatives during national emergencies.
TraciAnn earned her Master's in Public Health from Boston University, where she received the school's Inaugural Restuccia Award for Achievement in Social Justice in Community Health. She also holds a Bachelor's in psychology with a minor in business administration from Gallaudet University in Washington DC. TraciAnn has over 6 years of research and project management experience in public health, neuroscience, policy analysis and development, communications and outreach, and disability advocacy.

We are probably biased when it comes to this, but we think that we have the best student workers!! 😜 Do you all remember Nthabeleng MacDonald from when she moderated for our Trivia Cup's U.S. Government and the 2020 Elections event? Well, we wanted to take this time to congratulate her on her incredible achievement:

"Nthabeleng MacDonald, a sophomore Honors student, presented her Honors capstone proposal, “Closing the Race Gap and Equalizing Honors Education: College-Prep Courses in Secondary School Curricula" during the fifth annual conference of the National Society for Minorities in Honors in mid-September. She was the only undergraduate presenter at the conference. Nthabeleng, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, is majoring in psychology, with a minor in biology/pre-medicine. She is a Peer Leader with the Office of Student Success, President of the National Society for Leadership and Success, a Student Assistant with Youth Programs, and a member of the university’s debate team."
