DCPS Food and Nutrition Services

DCPS Food and Nutrition Services We believe it is important to cultivate a natural palate at an early age.

Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) supports student health and achievement by ensuring that all DCPS students receive nutritious meals and acquire the resources to make healthy choices. Our Mission: “All DC Public Schools students are engaged and have access to wholesome and delicious meals that promote long-term wellness, preparation for learning and satisfaction with their school.”

DCPS Food and

Nutrition Services believes in serving students whole, primarily unprocessed, high-quality, natural foods which are prepared and presented in an appetizing manner. We believe in the value of eating seasonally and in purchasing food from local growers to ensure peak freshness and to support the local economy. We believe that eating is critical to academic success and that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We believe that all students should have access to school meals and should be given food choice. We believe that nutrition education and adult role modeling are fundamental to school food change. We believe that school garden programs, after school cooking classes, and culinary education courses create lifelong good habits.

Simple. Crunchy. Totally underrated. 🥬 Celery is one of the fresh veggies our students snack on during the school year through our Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program and it's just as good at home this summer!

Try it with nut butter, hummus, or cream cheese for a snack the whole family will love. High in fiber, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. It's a win all around. 💪

Back-to-school will be here before you know it! 🏫

Blueberry season is HERE and we are not letting it pass by! 🫐

Pick some up at your local market this summer and try this easy snack at home: dip blueberries in yogurt, freeze on a baking sheet, and enjoy! Cool, sweet, and packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants. 🙌

When school is back in session, our students get to explore fresh fruits and veggies like these through our Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program — stay tuned for more this fall!

Did you know that at least 25% of the food ingredients used in DCPS school meals are locally grown or locally processed? 🌱

That means the fruits, vegetables, and ingredients on your student's tray are coming from right here in our region, grown in places like Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and right here in the District.

Serving local means fresher food, stronger communities, and a direct investment in the farmers and producers around us. We're proud to bring that commitment to every meal we serve.

Apples aren't just delicious — they're packed with fiber to support healthy digestion and keep kids feeling full and focused! 🍎

That's exactly why fruits like these have a place on the school menu. When children start their day with a nutritious breakfast, they're better prepared to learn, focus, and thrive in the classroom. 🧠

Make sure your student is eating breakfast at school this fall, it makes all the difference!

Have you ever tried a beet? 🩷 This summer we're spotlighting some of the fresh produce our students get to explore during the school year through our Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program — and beets are one of our favorites.

Sweet, earthy, and grown right in the ground — beets are a fun one to try at home while they're in peak season.

Try making beet hummus and let us know what you think! 👇
