Are you a two year or four year student home on holiday break? Consider applying now!
The Ocean Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program at California State University, Monterey Bay is now accepting applications for our 2019 summer program! Our REU is open to students from 2 and 4 year colleges in all STEM-related majors.
Students in our REU program can choose to conduct research in Monterey Bay in the following areas (the list of research topics within each area is not exhaustive):
Marine Biology and Ecology (includes population ecology, kelp forest ecology, marine landscape ecology, marine microbiology, population genetics, ecophysiology and biomechanics)
Ocean Engineering (includes ocean robotics, autonomous underwater vehicle design, computer programming, scientific instrumentation development)
Oceanography (includes ocean current modeling, ocean-atmosphere interactions, ocean acidification and plankton ecology)
Marine Geology (includes deep sea canyon formation, coastal hydrology, seafloor mapping, coastal erosion, plate tectonics and marine biogeochemistry)
In addition to electing to work with mentors at CSU Monterey Bay students can also elect to work with mentors at our Monterey Bay area REU partner institutions. For 2019 these include:
Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University
Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
Moss Landing Marine Labs
Naval Postgraduate School
Students will be provided with a $5,000 stipend in addition to support for travel, room and board. REU students will also receive post-REU support to attend conferences and in applying to graduate programs. The application portal will close on February 11th, 2019 at 11:59 PM PST. Our 10 week summer program will run from June 3rd to August 9th, 2019 (not including travel days). Additional program details, including application and eligibility information, can be found on our homepage: https://csumb.edu/reu. A program flyer is also attached.
We especially encourage applications from student groups historically underrepresented in the Ocean Sciences and students from institutions where research opportunities are limited (Junior/Community Colleges, Tribal Colleges, HBCUs and HSIs). Preference is given to student applicants who are current sophomores or juniors.
Please direct any questions about the program to our REU email address ([email protected]), and feel free to share this announcement far and wide.

Fall internships - yes FALL internships are starting to pop up! Check this one out! The Savannah State University Dolphin Sciences Laboratory (SSUDS lab) is accepting applications for Fall 2016 interns. There are 2 positions available. Application deadline is June 24th.
The SSUDS lab is located adjacent to the marsh on the campus of Savannah State University in coastal Georgia. The SSUDS lab and Dr. Tara Cox study spatial ecology and conservation biology of long-lived marine vertebrates, marine and coastal policy and management, and human interactions with marine mammals. Current projects include: Human-interaction behaviors (particularly begging), stock structure and abundance estimates, mother/calf distribution and habitat use, and diet of common bottlenose dolphins.
Interns will support graduate research on common bottlenose dolphins living in the local waterways. In addition, there may be opportunities to help other marine science graduate students with diverse fieldwork.
Dates: Aug 1st - Dec 16th (Start and end dates are flexible)
Location: Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia
Time: Interns are expected to commit to ~30 hours per week and their time will be split between lab and field work. Dolphin surveys will be conducted 2 days per month.
Lab duties include: photo-identification, data entry and double checking
Field duties: assisting with small boat-based photo-identification surveys including sighting dolphins, data recording, photography, and environmental measurements
Class: Interns are welcome to sit in on the Conservation Biology and/or Coastal Zone Management courses taught by Dr. Cox in the fall. Please note that hours spent in class do not count towards lab hours.
