We believe that every DC student in need of additional support can and should have access to a tutor or mentor. Learn more about us at: www.dctutormentor.org

We are a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to empowering students in the District of Columbia and transforming the community. DC Tutoring and Mentoring Initiative
(1) recruits and mobilizes local volunteers
(2) links them with tutoring and mentoring programs/organizations already in operation
(3) provides on-going support to these organizations
in order to reach out to every DC youth in need of additional academic and non-academic support.

A lovely, energetic Saturday afternoon at the U Street Neighborhood Association's Temperance Alley Garden!

We were joined by 17 community members, from DC natives to 2-week-old new residents, each of whom brought a curiosity to learn about getting involved with our Neighborhood Tutoring Teams! These small, volunteer-run teams support local youth in Shaw/Ut, NoMa/Trinidad, Petworth/Mt. Pleasant, Congress Heights/Anacostia, and Capitol Hill.

Thank you to all who joined us, made the event so refreshing, and stepped up as summer is pretty much here. This is a crucial period where we need to help close learning gaps and prevent the summer slide of students' reading and math skills! If you weren't able to attend, keep an eye out for more of our neighborhood and city-wide events this summer.

Many thanks to the U St Neighborhood Association and Temperance Alley Garden volunteers for sharing this beautiful community space with us.DM us to learn more!

Can we talk about how BEAUTIFUL this weekend was??!! We signed up over 100+ people interested in getting started or learning more about volunteering. We had a stellar start at the Community Wellness Fair at Maya Angelou Schools & See Forever Foundation on Thursday, sharing local tutoring, mentoring, and coaching opportunities. In the evening, Cleveland Park Main Street's Night Market brought out a wonderful crowd!

Then, as always, Petworth PorchFest was a hit on Saturday! Between the good music and delightful weather, we shared so many conversations with caring neighbors wanting to get involved. Our team also tabled at the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market DC and hosted our Neighborhood Tutoring Teams info session at U Street Neighborhood Association's Temperance Alley Garden.

Community yoga also continued at Columbia Heights Green, where D_YogaDude led a group of 15 attendees in a rejuvenating session!

Finally, on Sunday, we soaked up great connections at the Bloomingdale Farmers Market to close out our volunteer recruitment efforts.

Grateful for everyone who shared their time and story with us. Keep an eye out on your emails as we match you to one of our 50+ nonprofit and school partners!

Fantastic being at the Amazon Black Employee Network (BENDMV)'s Tech Day of Service earlier this week!

It was great chatting with several employees looking to give back to the community! We connected with folks looking to help with math, reading, mentorship and more.

Huge thanks to Brittany Turner and the BENDMV team for organizing service opportunities like packing kits for shelters and for welcoming local nonprofits to connect with the team. It was great being there with NMDP and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, DC - A*O! A special shout-out to Shae for keeping the energy up in the room and capturing content for the day!

☀️ Summer is around the corner, but so is summer learning loss.

Many families continue working full time while school is out. Not all students have access to the programs that keep math and reading skills sharp. But you can make a difference with our Neighborhood Tutoring Teams (NTTs)!

Picture small teams of 2 to 3 neighborhood adults who work with 4-6 public school students. They meet in a safe space 1-3 times a week – a library, park, church, rec center – right in students' and tutors' own communities!

Learn more about our NTTs on Saturday or get connected to one of our 50+ school and nonprofit partners across the DMV!

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” – John F. Kennedy

Today and every day we remember those who have bravely given their lives in service to our country.

Honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by serving your own community.
