In her first days at GW Business, Macarena Martínez Rivera MBA, MAcc thought about dropping her accounting class.
She had just arrived in Washington, D.C., from Chile, alone in a city that felt unfamiliar.
“Professor Donald Buzinkai looked very strict,” she says. “For a moment, I thought about switching to another professor.”
But Macarena stayed — and she’s glad she did.
The course introduced her to data analysis and tools such as Tableau, skills she uses in her work today.
At GW, she stepped into a new chapter, pursuing her degree during a two-year professional development leave from her public-sector role.
Now back in Chile, Macarena leads international audit work and represents her country abroad, including in Washington.
During a recent visit, we met up with her and took photos near our new ad campaign. Later, she spotted a bus ad while on the move and snapped a selfie.

Yesterday marked the end of first-year classes for the Global MBA Class of 2027!
To celebrate, the MBA Association (MBAA) board surprised the class with personalized GW MBA Class of 2027 hats—and everyone showed up wearing them.
Such a fun way to mark the end of the year and to capture a snapshot of the community that continues to thrive, one class after another.

As the April 15 filing deadline comes to a close, over a hundred community members served by GW’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program can rest easy knowing their returns are complete.
Led by Accountancy Professor Bill Stromsem, the program brought together student volunteers from the GW School of Business and GW Law.
Student leaders Maggie Wu and Jorge Sanchez helped guide operations and supported their peers as they provided free tax assistance to individuals navigating a complex system.
Together, they helped clients access critical refunds while giving students hands-on experience that turned classroom learning into meaningful community impact.

The GW School of Business and The World Bank Group have announced a new partnership to connect students more directly with global development work.
The agreement was formalized April 8 at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C., ahead of the Spring Meetings. It aims to expand hands-on learning and strengthen talent pipelines. The collaboration builds on discussions between the institutions, with Ramit Nagpal serving as a university relationship manager and senior sponsor.
Dean Sevin Yeltekin said the partnership will broaden student engagement with the World Bank Group, while Samit Nag, director of HR at the World Bank Group, said it will help earlier engagement between students and development institutions.
Alumni and student perspectives — including Ana Maria Gonzalez Velosa, Konstantinos D. Kollias and Zuleirys Santana-Rodriguez — highlight the initiative’s impact, part of a broader World Bank Group effort to work with universities and expand knowledge exchange.
