Don't miss our next gallery talk in conjunction with our latest exhibition, Cooling the Planet one Step at a Time: 15 Ways to Reduce Your Home Carbon Footprint!

On March 26th, the founders of BLDUS will present recently completed houses from around the DC region that feature natural materials and embody an environmentalist ethos that prioritizes the health of a building's inhabitants equally to land from which its materials originated. BLDUS seeks opportunities in economies of scale, of scope, of density, of means, and of materials, integrating traditional construction methods with new technologies and organic materials ideally suited to their region--in Appalachia and Tidewater, that means wood, bark, cork, wool, mycelium, willow, h**p, bamboo, and stone--to create an architecture of accommodation. In 2023 BLDUS was honored with a Vanguard Award from Architectural Record and in 2019 with a Young Architect Award from The Architect's Newspaper.

Please join us on February 9, 2024, from 4-6 pm for a walking tour of the U street corridor.

Once known as Washington’s “Black Broadway,” the U Street corridor has been the civic and cultural heart of the District’s Black community since the turn of the century. Rich in architecture, history and culture, U Street was developed by and for the then segregated Black community of the Federal Capital. Revered Jazz icons like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Cab Calloway once walked U Street, performing at nightclubs and glamorous music halls in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Beautiful buildings, largely designed by local Black architects, still stand as a testament to this self-sustaining community.

On the residential side streets, a fascinating evolution of row house development and design is evident in the diverse and varied homes, some dating back to the 1860s!

The tour begins at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum, and will trace the history of the area through its architecture– from the Civil War to Black Broadway, from civil unrest, through local perseverance, and future plans.

The built environment generates almost 50% of global CO2 emissions. Architects, engineers, and building owners must work together and commit to net zero emissions by 2030 to reduce the impact on climate change as specified by various climate and decarbonization initiatives. Further, in order to address climate change and decarbonization, policymakers are enacting building performance laws that require buildings to meet certain performance standards. Design professionals are uniquely suited to mitigate help resolve the climate crisis through design, educating clients, and working with navigating policy requirements to advance decarbonization and build greener cities.

Join us at the District Architecture Center for the first DesignDC symposium of 2024, where architects and designers will gain key insights on mitigating operational and embodied carbon, talking to clients about regenerative design, policy, and financial incentives and resources.

Please join us at the District Architecture Center on February 15th from 6-8 pm to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition, Adrienne Moumin: In Another Life.

Adrienne Moumin is a visual artist based in New York, NY and Silver Spring, MD. Moumin specializes in printed black & white photography and handmade photo collage. Many of these collages are reimagined conceptualizations of simple structures, such as light fixtures, doorways, and arches. Moumin is best known for her “Architextures” photo series, which is inspired by architecture and urban landscapes. With this exhibition, Adrienne Moumin presents a collection of her works that display her unique style of collage, and love for architecture.

Meet the artist and take time to examine each unique piece, and read each image caption to discover the real-life structure behind every collage. Drinks and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. The link to registration can be found on our website at https://buff.ly/4bh0GKe .

This exhibition is organized by the District Architecture Center in collaboration with Adrienne Moumin for the Suman Sorg Gallery.

Tomorrow, please join us at the District Architecture Center from 6 pm to 8 pm for our 2024 Lautman lecture with Katie Swenson. Katie Swenson is a nationally recognized design leader, researcher, writer, and educator. Her work explores how critical design practice can, and should, promote economic and social equity, environmental sustainability, and healthy communities. Katie has over 20 years of experience in the theoretical and practical application of design thinking and is a talented global public speaker and thought leader.

The Robert and Kay Lautman Lecture is a new annual program to honor two strong proponents of the Washington Architectural Foundation’s work. This program brings nationally and internationally renowned figures in the fields of architecture and art to lecture on the intersection between architecture, design, and art. The annual event will be recorded and made available to a wider audience online. We believe this special annual lecture will have the added benefit of highlighting WAF’s work in the community.
