Founded in 1965, Lowell School is a progressive co-ed pre-K through 8th-grade school in Washington, DC.

Through an individualized approach in which learning is joyful, we equip children to think critically, engage purposefully, and live authentically.

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but our responsibility as an educational community goes beyond a single date on the calendar. At Lowell School, we are committed to learning about the history, traditions, and enduring presence of Indigenous Peoples, especially the Piscataway and Nacotchtank communities on whose ancestral homelands we live, play, and grow.

Through continuous classroom learning, active listening, and open conversation, we strive to build a deeper understanding of Indigenous histories and honor their ongoing strength, culture, and contributions every day of the year.

Hands-on science in action! Today, our middle schoolers took on a real engineering challenge: building custom parachutes to land a raw egg safely from a drop.

Students focused on slowing down the fall by adjusting the parachute's shape, size, and string length to catch enough air. They spent the class building and testing. Excellent teamwork and problem-solving on display all day!

It may have been a rainy weekend, but the sun was definitely shining on Friday afternoon when the Leopards came out to play. ⚽ 🥅 Both of our teams worked together during their matches to bring home the win: 3-1 for the girls and 7-3 for the boys—and when they weren't giving it their all on the pitch, they were cheering for each other from the sidelines. LET'S GO LOWELL! 🐾 💚

The first Buddy Day of a school year is kind of like the Super Bowl. It's the only thing anyone can talk about...there are lots of high-fives, hugs, and cheering...and it's over way too fast! We're confident our 1st- and 6th-grade buddies would agree.

Starting in pre-primary school, students are paired with an older grade, and the groups meet once a month for a morning of fun, engaging activities. The relationships formed during this time become incredibly meaningful, so meaningful that it's common to hear a student call out their buddy's name in the carpool line, run up to them in the hallway for a hug, and even show up to birthday parties and get shout-outs during Moving Forward and Graduation celebrations.

Today, our 5th graders dove into their summer reading recaps for Jen Wang’s graphic novel Stargazing, reflecting on the story of Moon and Christine and sharing their favorite moments from the book. Through written reflections and lively class discussion, students unpacked the story's core themes: exploring how the characters navigate differences, handle friendship struggles like jealousy, and show up for one another in tough times.

Stargazing aligns with Lowell’s values of empathy, social-emotional growth, and celebrating individuality. By following two very different girls who build a deep connection, the story encourages our students to look past first impressions, embrace diverse perspectives, and develop the emotional tools needed to build authentic, supportive relationships both inside and outside the classroom.
