“Full of Strength.” And full of truth.
This Charter Day, Howard honors Dr. Jelani Cobb (B.A. ’94), dean of Columbia Journalism School, historian, documentarian, and one of the nation’s most essential voices on race, politics, and power.
From writing raps in New York to writing for The New Yorker, from studying the Black Diaspora at The Mecca to leading one of the world’s top journalism schools, Cobb’s foundation was forged right here.
“With the exception of my family… no other institution has had as much of an impact on who I am as Howard.”
At Howard, he learned that if you only know half the story, you hardly know it at all. He learned to scrutinize power, not chase it. And he embraced a name that means exactly what he embodies: Jelani, “full of strength.”
“You have to be prepared to do something simple but deceptively complicated… tell the truth.”
Truth and Service. In action.
