On Monday, March 23, USCET held the public launch of its Working Group report, America's China Talent Challenge: Investing in Deeper American Understanding of China, at the Elliott School of International Affairs.
The report takes stock of a growing expertise gap in American understanding of China and lays out a roadmap for reversing it. Ambassador Nicholas Burns delivered opening remarks, underscoring the issue as a national security imperative. Working Group members David Lampton, Mark Lambert, Mahboubi, Jean Oi, and Madelyn Ross elaborated on the report's findings and recommendations.
We also extend special thanks to for hosting a closed-door preview in advance of the public launch.

People-to-people ties have long sustained U.S.–China relations afloat—from ping-pong diplomacy in the 1970s to the surge of educational exchange in the 1990s. Today, however, academic partnerships, student exchanges, business networks, and diaspora connections face new restrictions under the banner of national security. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, whose families and careers often bridge both countries, are uniquely affected.
Join USCET, APA Justice, and Committee of 100 on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 8:00 p.m. ET for a conversation on the past, present, and future of people-to-people ties—and what shifting U.S. policy means for AAPI communities at home. Featured speakers: Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch and Governor Gary Locke, in dialogue with Jessica Chen Weiss, David M. Lampton Professor of China Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS.
