Peace Psychology and the Deadly Competition Between Democracy and Dictatorship

The new PAC volume was just published (Sept 4, 2021)

"On a more hopeful note, the second group of seven empirical studies come under the heading “solutions,” and reflect the creativity and promise of the peace psychology community. Staying with the theme of hope, the two Brief Research Reports and two Book Reviews included in this issue of the journal all reflect on the theme of peacebuilding in different ways. Importantly, these reports and reviews reflect on the complexities of conflict and the urgent need for peace psychologists to break out of narrow disciplinary boundaries (Moghaddam, 2021) and not be shackled by disciplinary conventions. Conflict transformation efforts will be more successful through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches" Moghadam (2021, page. 338)

This is the real global post-covid academic challenge - across disciplines: To move beyond narrow academic discipline "borders" and ...bodies of knowledge. So- let's break these borders (move our bodies) and join forces to tackle this challenge with humanity in action goals and scorekeeping. With actions, scholarship and evidence from the field (see O4H Actualization, Theory and Praxis, Lyras, 2021)

The essence of the Olympic idea is to unleash and actualize human creativity and potential 08/03/2021

The hidden threat behind IOC Rule 50 and IPC Section 2.2.

“No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.” (IOC Rule 50)

“No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Paralympic venues or other areas related to the Paralympic games.” (IPC Section 2.2)

One the one hand, the word "propaganda", firms the IOC/IPC's intention to potentially protect the Games from abusive political agendas. On the other hand, the hidden threat behind these rules- is the reductionist separation between the concepts of Olympism, Humanism and Democracy- words that should be interpreted as integrated constructs that are synonymous to the Olympic Heritage and idea. Such a reductionist approach, that separates these constructs (e.g. Olympic ideals, Human rights, Democracy and justice)- can lead to abusive malpractice of the so call "Power of Sport" across Sport and non Sport agencies across continents.

Lyras' Olympism for Humanity and Sport for Development Theories provide an alternative framework with evidence from the field- where Olympism-sport development and sport for development are integrated concepts- a competency framework and a program/event evaluation blueprint that can help sport scholars and practitioners overcome this threat with scholarship, programming and interventions that would embrace and optimize Olympism for Humanity Literacy as an alternative tool for Personal and Democracy Actualization (Lyras, 2020, 2021). Getting closer in other words to the essence of the Olympic idea: “harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity” (Fundamental Principle 2, Olympic Charter).

Olympism, Humanity and Action: Three essential constructs (and pathway) that can help us understand- and move closer to Olympism for Humanity Actualization.

"The ideal, according to the O4H Theory—and the way to decrease the divide between the Olympic idea and today’s reality can be conceptualized, analyzed, and pursued by a close investigation and in-depth analysis of all three constructs (Olympism, Humanity, and Action). On the one extreme, we can have sport events that are totally corrupted and disconnected from values, peace outcomes, and humanity and on the other extreme we can have cities across cultures competing with sport–education–cultural contests toward peacebuilding and sustainable development goals and outcomes."
