Find us on campus: http://goo.gl/maps/EpOjw The UDC Garden Club got its start in 2010, when a group of students from the Caribbean Students Association approached the Director of the Office of International Programs and Exchanges, Denis Antoine, about restoring a neglected rose garden on the plaza of UDC's Van Ness Campus. The students were introduced to UDC staff working in the Agricultural Exper
iment Station, including farmers from UDC's 148-acre Muirkirk Farm in Beltsville, Maryland. Over the following year, undergraduate students, graduate students from UDC's College of Agriculture Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), and students from UDC's law school worked together to clear out the space, grow vegetables, and incorporate the garden into the university's culture. In the fall of 2011, this informal group became an official student organization. The group defined itself as a non-hierarchical student organization that sought to educate students, faculty, and members of the community about the benefits of community gardening, while also trying to address social issues through agriculture. Since then, the group has continued its effort to grow food and flowers on UDC's campus as sustainably as possible. The Garden Club hopes to one day participate in the university's farmer's markets, establish an on-campus composting site, and offer a CSA option to students and the surrounding community.
