Before Brown v. Board | NEA 06/02/2026

In 1923, a 15-year-old Paiute girl named Alice Piper was denied entry to her local public school simply because she was Native American. Her family fought back, and the California Supreme Court ruled in her favor, 30 years before Brown v. Board of Education.

Her story is a reminder that the fight for every student's right to a great public school has deep roots, and that young people have always been at the heart of it.

A bronze bell passed down from a great-aunt who taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Shiny rocks harvested by students. A hand-knitted duck named Daniel. Student & Educator Mental Health | NEA 05/29/2026

Our schools are the center of our communities and should be safe, supportive places where every student can thrive. Our students can’t learn if they aren’t well, which is why schools need the resources, staffing, and programs necessary to support mental health.

NEA’s Mental Health Hub provides educators with tools, information, and resources to help strengthen school communities and support student well-being. By working together, we can help ensure students get the support they need.

The Education Case for Single-Payer Healthcare Systems | NEA 05/28/2026

In Los Angeles, the school district spends $1.1 billion a year on healthcare premiums. Imagine if even half of that went back into classrooms.

Rising healthcare costs are not just a personal burden for educators and families; they are eating up school budgets and leaving students without the teachers, counselors, and resources they need. From California to Massachusetts, NEA members are making the case that replacing for-profit health insurance with a government-funded system that covers everyone is an education issue, too.

The Crisis in College Accreditation and Why It Matters | NEA 05/27/2026

Higher education has always been about exploring ideas freely, not having politicians decide what's allowed in the classroom. But that academic freedom is now under serious threat.

The Trump administration's proposed changes to college accreditation would give politicians unprecedented control over what's taught on campus. Students would pay the price with a much narrower education and a loss of access to financial aid and student loans that millions rely on to afford college. 🔗 Read the article to learn what else is at stake.
