Harrison Topp operates Topp Fruits in Paonia, Colorado, and works as the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union Director of Membership, as a community organizer around agricultural and oil and gas issues, and as a cooperative developer. He earned a degree from New York University in 2009 with a double major in Film Production and Anthropology. From 2009 to 2010, Harrison developed his community organizing skills during the production of a community-driven film project focused on the music and dance culture of western North Carolina. When the project concluded, Harrison followed his passion for agriculture and became the manager of a market farm and CSA.
In 2013, Harrison returned to his home state of Colorado to work as an AmeriCorps VISTA with the Montezuma School to Farm Project. During this time he and a small team also reopened the Mt. Lookout Grange in Mancos, Colorado, turning it into a vibrant community space focused on agricultural and environmental education. In 2014, Harrison began working for the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union and took over management of the family orchard. His work consists of managing community organizers to help rural communities develop effective organizations and establish member-owned cooperatives. He and his staff assist these local groups in protecting their water, soil, and natural resources; representing the needs of agriculture on a local and state level; and creating sustainable economic opportunities.
