This launch event combines a book talk, author Q&A, and a networking reception that explores the extraordinary leadership, decision‑making, and performance lessons revealed through this iconic Civil War regiment. Dr. Peatman will share new insights unearthed through his research, spotlighting the individuals who shaped the Twentieth Maine’s legacy at Gettysburg and beyond, and connecting their experiences to modern leadership challenges.

Join us in congratulating our 2026 Dr. Richard F. Southby Police Science Prize recipient, Andy L. Heppeard.

Dr. Richard F. Southby was a faculty member at the George Washington University from 1979 to 2006, having served as department chair, associate dean, interim dean of the former School of Public Health and Health Services, distinguished professor of global health, and executive dean in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs. He was granted emeritus status by the Board of Trustees in 2006. Dr. Southby was the founding director of the Police Science Program in the College of Professional Studies.

Andy receives this honor for his exceptional performance in the Bachelor of Professional Studies in Homeland Security/Police and Security Studies program.

Desmond is a senior active-duty U.S. Army Sergeant Major, educator, author, and Congressional Defense Fellow whose career spans military leadership, higher education instruction, and national-level legislative engagement.
