UHP creates powerful learning experiences for GW public health students to mitigate DC Metro’s community-identified public health challenges and promote a long-lasting impact in the shared community.

This Saturday, we welcomed our newest cohort of Urban Health Fellows GW School of Public Health for a full day of connection and preparation for the year ahead. From the very start, this cohort showed up engaged and ready to learn by sharing thoughtful and profound reflections that left us energized and excited about the impact they will have throughout the year ahead.

Together, we read the words of Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s The Invitation and reflected upon what it means to be invited into communities. As we begin this new year, we are deeply grateful to our Community Partners for inviting us into their organizations, their work, and their communities. It’s an invitation we are honored to accept and do not take lightly.

As Fellows enter these spaces, Teaching Fellow Zinash Robi asked them to ground themselves in three simple commitments: Be Present. Be Curious. Be Engaged. And Teaching Fellow Nii Hanson-Nortey encouraged us to embody the words of Lao Tzu and recognize that meaningful community work is not about leading from the outside, but about working alongside communities in ways that honor their knowledge and leadership.

With that, we are delighted to welcome the ‘26–‘27 cohort of Urban Health Fellows! Here’s to a year of growing together through collaboration.

Wondering what all the buzz is about around our Community Conversations?

These once-a-month sessions are an opportunity for Urban Health Fellows to learn from and engage with DC leaders and public health experts about issues impacting our field.

Want the opportunity to discuss health policy with the Director of the Committee on Health for the DC City Council or why language and identity are the cornerstone of community engagement from the Special Assistant to the Chief Health Officer at the Montgomery County Department of Health? What to hear from a women’s rights advocate using her art as activism or learn how to testify before the DC City Council from an expert? Want to build the skills to pitch to funders from a professional with a leading national policy organization? Want to unpack how issues like financial toxicity, housing insecurity, and mis/disinformation are impacting the health of our communities from the people working to solve these problems?

Our Community Conversations afford Fellows the ability to grow their networks and develop professional skills while creating a space that enables Fellows to reflect on their role and responsibilities as future public health leaders.

The Urban Health Fellowship Program was proud to recognize hosted by as its Community Partner of the Year at the 4th Annual Practice Partner Awards & Recognition Ceremony at this month.

Over the past three years, the organization has welcomed upwards of 50 Urban Health Fellows, including eight during this current academic year, to collaborate on projects related to substance use and prevention. This year, Fellows have had the opportunity to work alongside the DC Prevention Center on the Look Out, Lift Up project, with the aim of empowering youth to become effective public health advocates for their communities. Leaders Nola Rich, Carmen Bonilla Araujo, and Rubini Hernandez further enrich the Fellowship experience by supporting several students with their practicum experiences. Beyond serving as collaborators and educators, the DC Prevention Center has also provided job placements to outstanding Fellows, reinforcing a strong pipeline from learning to leadership.

This recognition comes full circle, as Nola herself is a UHP alumna who participated in UHP while pursuing her MPH at the Milken Institute School of Public Health from 2020–2022!

We extend our deepest appreciation to the DC Prevention Center Wards 1 & 2 team for their unwavering commitment to this partnership and for the lasting impact they continue to have on our students and our community. Thank you!

At the 4th Annual Practice Partner Awards & Recognition Ceremony at , two outstanding Urban Health Fellows shared powerful reflections on this past year, highlighting their contributions to community health interventions, their experiences learning directly from DC community members, and their growth as emerging public health leaders. Thank you, Brayden Alexis and Devin Murphy-Stanley, for representing the Urban Health Fellowship Program with such remarkable distinction. 👏
