During the First Siege of Vienna in 1529, the battle wasn't fought only on the walls.

Ottoman engineers dug tunnels beneath the city, packed them with gunpowder, and detonated massive explosions to tear open the defenses. But Vienna's defenders responded with countermines of their own, racing underground to find and destroy the enemy tunnels before they could be fired.

It became a deadly battle beneath the earth—where a single tunnel could decide the fate of an entire city.

In 1529, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent led one of the largest armies Europe had seen in generations to the walls of Vienna.

With nearly 100,000 men, the Ottoman Empire seemed unstoppable. Standing in their way was a hastily reinforced city defended by only around 16,000 soldiers under the command of Niklas Graf Salm and Wilhelm von Roggendorf.

What followed was one of the most dramatic sieges in military history. Ottoman engineers dug tunnels beneath the walls. Massive explosions shattered fortifications. Assault troops stormed the breaches. Yet Vienna refused to fall.

But the defenders were not fighting the Ottomans alone. Rain, mud, disease, and failing logistics slowly turned the campaign against Suleiman's army.

This is the story of the First Siege of Vienna — the battle that helped define the struggle between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburgs and became one of the most important moments in European history.

In 1529, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent led nearly 100,000 Ottoman soldiers toward Vienna. But before the siege could truly begin, relentless rain flooded rivers, destroyed roads, and left much of the army's heavy artillery stranded in the mud.

The First Siege of Vienna became one of the most important moments in European history—and a reminder that sometimes nature can be as powerful as any army.
