The Spanish Education Development (SED) Center was founded in 1971 when a group of community leaders and parents joined together to establish daycare services for their children. These services became the first bilingual preschool in Washington, DC. As the population grew and became more diversified, the SED Center developed programs to meet the changing needs of a wide range of immigrants and their children. Today, the SED Center provides bilingual daycare and preschool programs for children ages three months to four years old and a high quality adult education program that includes English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), computer training, and GED classes. For 50 years, the SED Center has helped families take full advantage of all the social, educational, and economic opportunities available to them. Our programs reinforce positive interactions, the celebration of cultural and linguistic differences, and the enhancement of bilingualism and multiculturalism.

Last week, we welcomed our families for Parent Orientation, a special opportunity to come together, share important information, and begin a new school year as a community.

Thank you to all the families who joined us and to our staff for helping create a space filled with community, collaboration, and excitement. We are looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Last week, SED Center took some time to invest in the people who make our classrooms so special. 💙

While the center was closed for our children, our teachers and staff came together for Staff Development Week, taking part in professional development courses and training designed to prepare us for another amazing school year.

Throughout the week, our team explored a variety of topics and resources, including WETA PBS KIDS trainings, Kimochis, and Social-Emotional Learning, strengthening the tools and strategies they use to support our children’s emotional well-being, development, and learning every day.

These opportunities allow our teachers to continue learning, growing, and strengthening the skills they bring into the classroom. Most importantly, they help us create nurturing, engaging, and supportive learning environments where every child can feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

We are so proud of our dedicated SED Center team and grateful for the time, energy, and commitment they continue to give to our children and families. ❤️

Here’s to a new school year filled with learning, growth, and new possibilities!

La semana pasada, en SED nos tomamos un tiempo para invertir en las personas que hacen que nuestros salones de clase sean tan especiales. 💙

Mientras el centro estuvo cerrado para nuestros niños, nuestros maestros y personal se reunieron para nuestra Semana de Desarrollo Profesional, participando en cursos y capacitaciones diseñados para prepararnos para otro año escolar increíble.

Durante la semana, nuestro equipo exploró una variedad de temas y recursos, incluyendo capacitaciones de WETA PBS KIDS, Kimochis y Aprendizaje Socioemocional, fortaleciendo las herramientas y estrategias que utilizan para apoyar el bienestar emocional, el desarrollo y el aprendizaje de nuestros niños todos los días.

Estas oportunidades permiten que nuestros maestros continúen aprendiendo, creciendo y fortaleciendo las habilidades que llevan al salón de clase. Más importante aún, nos ayudan a crear ambientes de aprendizaje acogedores, dinámicos y de apoyo, donde cada niño pueda sentirse seguro, valorado y listo para aprender.

SED Center Summer 2026 Volunteer & Internship Program

💙 As summer comes to an end and we get ready to welcome a new school year, we want to take a moment to celebrate and thank our amazing 2026 summer volunteers and interns!

This summer, they did so much more than complete daily tasks. They became part of our SED Center community, built meaningful relationships, supported our programs, and made an impact that will stay with us beyond their time here.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, creativity, and heart they brought to the SED Center. Thank you for making this summer such a special one!

We wish all of our volunteers and interns the very best in their next chapter, and we hope to see you again soon!

Our SED Center students had an incredible summer filled with learning, culture, music, and adventure at Wolf Trap! 🌿🎶

Throughout three special field trips, our students experienced engaging bilingual performances, storytelling, music, dance, and interactive activities. From Ricitos y los Tres Osos and A Bilingual Fiesta with Flor Bromley to Sofía’s Forest Adventure with Semilla Cultural, each visit gave our children the opportunity to explore new stories, sounds, and cultures in a fun and welcoming environment.

Between performances, our students enjoyed lunch, games, and special moments with their friends and SED staff. ❤️

We’re grateful for experiences like these that encourage curiosity, creativity, cultural appreciation, and learning beyond the classroom while creating memories our students will carry with them for years to come!

¡Nuestros estudiantes de SED Center disfrutaron de un verano increíble lleno de aprendizaje, cultura, música y aventuras en Wolf Trap! 🌿🎶

A través de tres excursiones especiales, nuestros estudiantes disfrutaron de espectáculos bilingües, cuentos, música, danza y actividades interactivas. Desde Ricitos y los Tres Osos y A Bilingual Fiesta con Flor Bromley, hasta La Aventura en el Bosque de Sofía con Semilla Cultural, cada visita les brindó la oportunidad de descubrir nuevas historias, sonidos y culturas en un ambiente divertido y acogedor.

Entre cada presentación, nuestros estudiantes también disfrutaron de almuerzos, juegos y momentos especiales junto a sus amigos y el personal de SED. ❤️

Last week, our students had the opportunity to welcome members of the DC Police Department to SED Center for a special educational visit.

Our guests shared what it means to serve and protect our community, talked about the important role police officers play every day, and answered questions from our curious students. One of the highlights of the visit was getting an up-close look inside a real patrol car, giving our children a fun, hands-on learning experience they won't soon forget.

Thank you to the DC Police Department for taking the time to connect with our students, inspire meaningful conversations, and help strengthen the relationship between our community and those who serve it.

La semana pasada, nuestros estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de recibir la visita del Departamento de Policía de DC para una actividad educativa muy especial.

Nuestros invitados compartieron en qué consiste su labor de servir y proteger a nuestra comunidad, hablaron sobre la importante función que desempeñan los oficiales de policía todos los días y respondieron las preguntas de nuestros curiosos estudiantes. Uno de los momentos más emocionantes fue conocer de cerca el interior de una patrulla policial, brindándoles una experiencia de aprendizaje práctica y memorable.

Agradecemos al Departamento de Policía de DC por dedicar su tiempo a compartir con nuestros estudiantes, inspirar conversaciones importantes y fortalecer la relación entre nuestra comunidad y quienes trabajan para mantenerla segura.
