A recent Science article highlighted the rapidly changing landscape of the the Mississippi River’s "Bird’s Foot" Delta. Due to climate change and years of sediment deprivation, this vital hub for , shipping, and coastal protection, is experiencing significant degradation. Sam Bentley, an LSU coastal geologist who researches the shifting delta, notes that “we actually know more about how deltas build than how they degrade…In a world where probably every major river delta is in retreat, it’s important to understand the forces that drive degradation.”

Our Mississippi River Delta Transition Initiative (MissDelta) aims to advance the science and understanding of the future physical changes in the Bird's Foot region under conditions of and other factors (e.g., river management) to inform those responsible for managing the region.
