In 1953, Katherine Johnson joined NACA (later NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration) as a human “computer.” She calculated spacecraft trajectories from Project Mercury to Apollo, as well as later space shuttle missions.

Main Street - Taylor, Texas is celebrating 150 years of history, innovation and community! 🎆

Built on agriculture, railroads and entrepreneurship, Taylor has long been a place where big ideas take root. That legacy comes to life with Spark! Places of Innovation, a Smithsonian Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition that highlights the people, partnerships and forward-thinking spirit constantly shaping small towns like Taylor.

On view August 15–September 27, the exhibition will be housed in the Heidenheimer Building, a former brick wholesale grocery warehouse whose adaptive reuse shows how historic places can continue to inspire creativity and connection.

Visitors will discover the people, events and innovations that have defined Taylor since 1876. From the transformative arrival of the International & Great Northern Railroad, which made Taylor a leading cotton market, to early-20th-century mechanical innovations that helped connect communities, improve public safety and drive economic growth.

We can’t believe our amazing Leadership for Change interns Eve and Akilah just finished up their last week with us! 😭

These two brilliant college students spent the summer helping to prepare and present our “Voices and Votes: Democracy Across America” exhibition at the Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building on the National Mall.

Last week they got to take a tour of our storage space and help prepare our “Americans” exhibition (developed with our colleagues at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian) for travel across the country!

Thank you, Eve and Akilah for your creativity, curiosity and meaningful contributions to our work this summer! 👏🏽🎉💕
