On May 18, 2025, the AATG Maryland/DC Metro Chapter of the AATG honored 55 German high schoolers who took the National German Exam and scored at or above the 80th percentile. Recipients of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Scholarship, the AATG-PAD Study Trip, and The German Society of Maryland Summer Study scholarship were also recognized. The event was co-sponsored by The German Society of Maryland (https://germansociety-md.com) who provided cash awards to all 55 students. Many thanks also go to UMBC for hosting, the American Association of Teachers of German for providing medals, and to Sylvia Petzarsky from the Cultural Affairs Section of the German Embassy Washington DC for encouraging remarks and goodie bags!

German Teaching Position open in Northern Virginia:
German Teacher for Immediate Hire (High School)
Summary
The New School of Northern Virginia (newschoolva.org) seeks a thought-provoking high school German teacher for immediate hire.
The position is offered part-time for the current school year (hours 10:30-1:45 Monday-Friday), with the option of full-time employment in subsequent school years.
We are a small, college-preparatory school with small classes (8-10 students average). In many respects, our school may be described as a high school version of a small liberal arts college.
A central goal of The New School is to teach students to use their minds well. Our teachers recognize the variety of ways students learn and use tools of authentic assessment to evaluate essential skills and concepts. Most critically, we foster a unique intellectual and collegiate spirit of equality between teachers and students, one that inspires students to take charge of their education and see themselves as successful, creative learners.
Teaching in such an environment takes a special kind of person – one who is thoughtful, thought provoking, and above all committed to seeing the students take ownership of their education.

Schedule, Salary, Longterm Opportunity
As mentioned, the position is offered part-time for the current school year with a base pay in the $40,000/year range, commensurate with experience. We are absolutely committed to offering the position full-time in subsequent years; we pride ourselves on our positive work environment and support of our teachers.
The schedule for this year is comprised of three daily periods with a lunch break, as follows:
--German 1 (10:40-11:25)
--German 2 (11:30-12:15)
--Lunch (12:15-1:00)
--German 3 (1:00-1:45)
Requirements
If interested in applying, please send a resume and cover letter explaining how your experience and approach to student learning make you a good fit for our program and school.
Thank you for your interest in joining The New School!
