ATTN: Washington journalists - I don't usually post about work here... but this one's for you!

Along with the rest of you, I’ve spent the past few weeks especially worried about this profession we love – and, as Director of Georgetown’s Journalism Program, worrying with the journalism students getting ready to launch their own careers this year. We’re all thinking about what’s next, so I’d like to highlight one good option:

Whether or not your future plans include a full-time editorial role – or something entirely new – I know firsthand that there are few experiences more fulfilling for a veteran journalist than spending time with aspiring reporters. So for those of you contemplating your next step – whether you’re on the beat or between roles right now, whether you’ve previously contemplated a future in academia or not: If you’d like to spend the next few months thinking about the future of this profession, and the fall semester having that conversation with undergraduates at Georgetown’s downtown campus located just blocks from the Capitol, please consider applying to teach our ‘The Media Industry’ course as an adjunct professor for Fall 2024. (more info at the link)

I will add that there may also soon be additional opportunities to teach in the coming academic year, across several beats and areas of expertise – please do email [email protected] if you would like to register your interest in leading a class on a different topic, skill or beat. Our current instructors are a diverse group of accomplished working journalists currently employed in senior roles at news organizations including The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, and Associated Press – but we have previously included, and welcome, prospective adjuncts with extensive editorial experience and skills who are not connected to a major news organization.

The lineup of stellar newsroom colleagues with whom I’ve been privileged to work – including so many of you! – could easily lead our course schedule several times over for the next decade. If there’s any way we can help even a fraction of you find a new way to share some of your amazing insight with the next generation of journalists, that might be the best industry development I’ve heard in a while.

We've still got a few weeks to go, but: rounding out the spring semester with huge thanks to Clay Risen, Hanna Rosin, Michael Kruse, Andrew Rice, Melinda Henneberger, Jon Allen, Stephen Marche, Karen Tumulty, Stefan Fatsis, Ben Terris and Scott Stossel for sharing their expertise with — and The Atlantic for opening its doors to — more than two dozen fantastic Georgetown seniors as they tackled their capstone journalism thesis projects. (The kids are alright...stay tuned for much more from this talented crew after graduation!)
