Gloria Steinem was a fierce fighter, a witty writer, and a tireless champion of equity and justice. As a journalist, activist, and feminist icon, she challenged the status quo and will be remembered for the trails she blazed in the name of progress. A steadfast defender of reproductive autonomy, she helped women gain and build economic security while growing political power. Gloria believed deeply in the importance of women owning and telling their own stories, ensuring that their experiences would never be diminished, overlooked, or swept under the rug.

In her lifetime, Gloria saw both immense progress and devastating backsliding, and through it all she never stopped fighting. In her 2022 Wesleyan University commencement address, she said, “I am a hope-a-holic. I believe that hope is a form of planning.”

That is the essence of what we must all continue to do to ensure that the gender equity Gloria spent her life championing becomes a full and lasting reality.

The recent recognition of both and is a reminder of how systemic barriers can widen wage gaps and compound inequities, especially as Black women continue to bear the brunt of a lethargic labor market.

This is especially true for care workers, who are disproportionately women of color. The undervaluing of their work is both a reflection of and a reason for the feminization of care work, underscoring the effects of occupational segregation, discrimination, and uneven access to paid leave and affordable care work.

How can you address employment discrimination if you don’t have the necessary data?

The EEOC’s proposal to remove the EEO-1 reporting requirements—which provides crucial demographic information needed to prevent employment discrimination—will make it harder to address workplace discrimination.

The EEOC claims the requirement is both unnecessary and burdensome. Neither is true: Evidence shows that discrimination against women and minority groups in hiring, pay, and promotions is persistent and very real. And the EEO-1 report is not only an efficient way to support enforcement of anti-discrimination protections; it helps deter discrimination.

All workers deserve a labor market in which they can seek opportunities regardless of their race, gender, or ethnicity—and our economy is stronger for it. Read IWPR’s letter opposing the EEOC’s proposed rule:
