Every time a presidential record is destroyed, a piece of history is lost.

Today, the AHA and American Oversight will urge a federal appeals court to uphold an order requiring the White House to comply with the Presidential Records Act.

“What is ultimately at stake in this case is the ability of Americans to access the full documentary record of their history—something that is essential in a democracy,” said AHA executive director Sarah Weicksel.

Presidential records aren't just important to historians. They help all of us understand our nation's history.

In a 2023 roundtable, the AHA and Society of American Archivists explored the importance of preserving these records and ensuring public access to them.

Today, the AHA is continuing this work through a lawsuit challenging a Department of Justice memorandum declaring the Presidential Records Act unconstitutional. The case concerns the preservation of hundreds of millions of presidential records and the public's ability to access and learn from them.
