We’re proud to recognize a leader who has helped shape New Futures from within.

At this year’s Night Out with New Futures, we’ll present the Gould Family Award to Susan Krause Bell.

Since joining our Board in 2016, Susan has guided New Futures through some of our most pivotal moments—with steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and a deep commitment to our Scholars.

Her impact on this organization is lasting, and we’re honored to celebrate her on June 5th.

We’re proud to share that New Futures has been named one of Washington Business Journal’s Best Places to Work for 2026.

Last night, CEO, Sherrod Williams, Ph.D., and Director of People, Culture & Operations, Jamila Williams, SHRM-CP, represented our team at Washington Business Journal's Best Places to Work ceremony to accept our award. This recognition is based on employee feedback and reflects a culture where staff feel supported, connected to the mission, and empowered to do meaningful work.

In a sector where burnout is common, investing in people is essential. Strong teams make strong impact.

We’re grateful to our staff, partners, and community for helping make New Futures what it is—one of the best places to work in the DMV!

to the energetic moments that move New Futures forward.

Every year at our annual benefit, this community shows up—and that support makes our work possible.

This year, we’re doing it differently. Night Out with New Futures is not your typical gala, but it's still one of our most important nights.

Have fun and support a critical local nonprofit while taking in art, culture, and community!

Last Thursday, the New Futures team stepped away from our day-to-day work to focus on something just as critical: *how* we do the work.

As our CEO, Sherrod Williams, Ph.D., shared:
“Taking time away from ‘the work’ to focus on our values *is* the work. If we don’t slow down and really think about how we’re operating, we default to our individual styles—and that’s where things can start to feel disconnected. The mission tells us what we do, the vision tells us where we’re going—but the values are the how. And the how is what shows up every single day in how we make decisions, collaborate, and show up for each other.”

This session was about moving beyond abstract language and grounding our values in practice. Together, we named the specific behaviors that reflect our values—and those that don’t—and had honest, collaborative conversations about how to ensure those values show up in our daily work, not just in a handbook or on a website.

That process matters. It’s how we reaffirm our shared commitment and think intentionally about how to live our values in real time—especially when navigating challenges, making decisions, and working across teams.

The impact was felt across our staff:
“It reinforced my appreciation for being part of such a dedicated and collaborative team.”
“I feel heard and embraced by my colleagues… Better together!”

At New Futures, we are intentional about building a culture where our values are not just articulated, but actively practiced—ensuring we move forward as a unified team in service of our Scholars and community.

Diana said it best: CareerCon > everything else.

This Saturday, 125+ New Futures Scholars get to choose their own experience, selecting exactly which workshops, panels, and sessions align with their career goals. No one telling them what they need. Just the freedom to build the day that works for them.

Want to be part of it? We need 30 more volunteers for our professional networking session (2-4:30pm). You'll connect with Scholars, help them build confidence, and give feedback on their elevator pitches in a fun, high-energy environment.

One afternoon. Real impact.

"These helped me so much."

Lorenzo talks a lot about networking in this video—and for good reason. Those conversations at last year's CareerCon helped them build confidence and competence that are still paying dividends today.

Now we need YOUR help making that happen for other Scholars. Volunteer to participate in our professional networking session at CareerCon 2026 and be the person who helps someone see what's possible.
