Emancipation DC History Fact
Emancipation Day marks the end of slavery in Washington, DC, when more than 3,000 enslaved people were freed on April 16, 1862—months before the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we gather in honor of that legacy—through music, culture, and community—with performances by T.I., Mýa, Tye Tribbett, Backyard Band, and more.
If you’re nearby, we would love to have you join us at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave NW. Gates are open, the concert begins at 2:30PM, and admission is free. We’re just getting started!

Headlined by T.I., TIP a special guest of HBCU Honors, as we continue to champion his cultural impact!
Featuring Mýa, Tye Tribbett, Backyard Band, Black Alley, 44 The Musical, and Souls of Kingsmen— this will be a distinguished celebration of freedom, legacy, and community.

Marking 21 years as an official District holiday, this moment honors the more than 3,100 enslaved people freed in Washington, DC in 1862—making DC the first place in the nation where emancipation became law.
