I am so extremely proud of these talented EO STEM scholars, Samara & Kamaria! The 2022 NTOYs through and received a special invitation from the White House and First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, to submit our students' self-portraits which would be included in this year's holiday decorations theme, "We the People." The student artwork was used to create ornaments displayed on Christmas trees in the East Wing of the White House. For the record, East Orange STEM Academy is the ONLY NJ school to have their student artwork displayed inside the White House. There’s something about a self-portrait that says, “Here I am. As I am.” Watching these teachers find their student self-portraits in the White House was a beautiful reminder that before anything else, teachers say, “I see you.”

I had no idea partnering with the First Lady’s team in October on this student self-portrait ornament project would turn into 22 teachers and their guests being invited to a private holiday tour at the White House where the teachers would be able to see their students’ artwork on the trees in the State Dining Room.

Talk about a day I won’t forget. (Which is good, because lately, the more invested I get in the moment, the fewer photos I take to capture it. 🙃). So proud of these teachers and this National Teacher of the Year Program!

It is hard to describe how special today was. As a 2022 CCSSO - The Council of Chief State School Officers state teacher of the year , I was asked to have students create self portraits that were used to decorate First Lady Dr. Jill Bidens We The Children Christmas tree in the White House. Today, I was able see the faces of students from Stagecoach Elementary Cabot Public School District (including my daughter Magnolia!) as beautiful ornaments decorating the trees in the State Dining Room. What a wonderful experience and one I’ll never forget.
Two months ago I was asked with the other 2022 CCSSO - The Council of Chief State School Officers State Teachers of the Year to have students create self portraits to use as decorations at the White House. Little did I know we would be invited to see our students faces decorate one of First Lady Dr. Jill Bidens beautiful trees. I’m so honored to represent Arkansas Department of Education and my amazing district Cabot Public School District today as we visit the White House!
Last night I was able to see the National Tree and the amazing art work from Little Rock West High School of Innovation LRSD. Wonderful representation from the state of Arkansas!
This is truly the season of giving! I’m so grateful to CCSSO - The Council of Chief State School Officers Sarah Brown Wessling Teaching & Learning for gifting our family the opportunity to attend a reception at the White House which allows us to view the beautiful tree ornaments designed by our students! “Students deserve to see themselves represented fully in their learning experiences. It builds a sense of empowerment so that they feel welcomed, they feel seen and they feel heard.” – Kurt Russell, 2022 Ohio Teacher of the Year and finalist.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Kurt struggled to engage with his students. He enlisted the help of Mrs. Becky Lahetta and together they introduced new technology (an interactive camera) allowing him to create more active lessons.

Kurt engages his students through movement! Every day, he poses a question to his students, and their response requires them to participate in a gallery walk activity.
