"I wanted to work as a teacher’s assistant, which requires a high school diploma or GED. Now that my children are all school-aged, I needed a job that matched their schedule so I could be home when they are. Working at the school felt like the best fit.
About a year after leaving high school, I was ready to earn my GED. At the time in New York, the only option available was a program called the TASC. It required going to the library twice a week and completing assigned work before you could even take the practice test and sign up for the real exam. Those hours didn’t work for me, and it was the only nearby option.
When New York switched back to the GED, I was excited to learn I could study at my own pace and on my own schedule from home. That flexibility made all the difference for someone in their 30s with children. The GED gave me the freedom to do it on my terms.
Now, my plan is to work in my children’s school district. If there’s a snow day or they’re home from school, I’ll already be off too, and I’m incredibly grateful for that opportunity." - Courtney, GED grad
