🔥🔥The Birch reduction converts arenes (typically benzene) to 1,4-dienes. In this example there is the -ketone (carbonyl) electron withdrawing group (EWG).
In cases like this the anion that is formed after the single electron transfer process, will be located on the carbon directly attached to the -ketone (EWG). The anion in that position is stabilized by the -carbonyl through resonance. A second electron transfer then follows to produce the 1,4 diene product.

Mechanism Lesson 252: Reaction A for having the highest votes!

The haloform reaction is the conversion of methyl ketones (a carbonyl attached to a CH3 group) to carboxylates (or carboxylic acids after acid work). Carbons are very bad leaving groups, however by adding 3 inductively withdrawing bromine groups, the carbon-carbonyl bond really weakens, so a hydrolysis reaction takes place. The byproduct is bromoform.
