Who gets access to housing, employment opportunities and credit?
Increasingly, artificial intelligence is helping make those decisions.
A new report co-authored by UDC David A. Clarke School of Law Professor Yvette N. A. Pappoe explores how AI-driven systems may create barriers that disproportionately affect communities of color and contribute to widening wealth disparities.
As technology continues to evolve, so does the need for thoughtful research and informed public dialogue.
Learn how UDC faculty are helping shape conversations around equity, law and emerging technologies.

As the University of the District of Columbia celebrates 175 years of transforming lives through education, we are proud to spotlight Interim Dean Angela Gilmore and her reflections on the enduring mission of the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law.
In her conversation with UDC, Dean Gilmore shares how UDC Law continues to advance access, opportunity, and justice through a legal education grounded in public service, experiential learning, and community impact. As the nation's only public HBCU law school and one of only six HBCU law schools in the country, UDC Law remains committed to preparing lawyers who are equipped not only to succeed in the profession but to serve as advocates, changemakers, and leaders in their communities.
Through nationally recognized clinical programs and a strong public interest mission, UDC Law students gain real-world experience while providing critical legal services to underserved communities. This commitment to justice is at the heart of who we are and what we do every day.
Thank you, Dean Gilmore, for your leadership and for continuing to champion a vision of legal education that empowers students to practice law, promote justice, and change lives.

UDC Law proudly celebrates the groundbreaking scholarship and leadership of Professor Yvette N.A. Pappoe, whose latest work is helping shape one of the most urgent conversations at the intersection of law, technology, civil rights, and economic justice. As co-author of the newly released report AI in the Racial Wealth Gap, alongside researchers Nadiyah J. Humber and Darlis Pantoja-Benavides, Professor Pappoe examines how artificial intelligence systems are influencing housing, lending, and employment decisions and how these technologies could either deepen or dismantle systemic inequities in America.
This cutting-edge research challenges the legal profession, policymakers, and technology leaders to confront the real-world consequences of algorithmic bias and to build stronger safeguards, transparency, and accountability into AI-driven systems. The report highlights the growing need for civil-rights-centered governance as AI rapidly transforms the legal and economic landscape.
Professor Pappoe’s scholarship reflects the mission of UDC Law: advancing justice, equity, and systemic change through bold legal thought and public impact. This important collaboration is helping shape the future of legal advocacy in the digital age and positioning UDC Law at the forefront of conversations redefining fairness, accountability, and equity in technology and society.
