"And now they want to tell us how Black history is to be taught," Davis said. "And Black studies emerged out of an effort to be more critical in the way we think about history, the way we think about culture, the way we think about the world. And I believe the majority of the people in this country are on the right track. I really do."

"…it’s not just about my brand and building the biggest beauty business I can. It’s 'How can I activate a supply chain that I’ve created to support other businesses who want to engage and be a part of this humongous industry?'"
- Rahama Wright, Founder and CEO of Shea Yaleen

Last month, we joined Center for African Studies at Howard University and Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center-Howard University to host a conversation on Women and Trade: Advancing African and Diaspora Women in the Global Marketplace.
Participants from the two panels included Ambassador Katherine Tai, United States Trade Representative; Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce; Marisa Lago, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of ITC Geneva; and Rahama Wright, Founder and CEO of Shea Yaleen.

Both panels focused on gender equity and equality and ways women from the African Diaspora can thrive in the global marketplace.

The Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership was created to support and encourage discussion, scholarship and activism on gender and women’s issues amongst the Howard University community, nationally and internationally.

We aim to be a Center of Excellence for Black women through our programming, which promotes transformational leadership, global engagement, research, service learning, and building impactful partnerships.

We've enjoyed working with our HU community near and far, and look forward to strengthening our relationships.

Let a new earth rise.
Let another world be born.
Let a bloody peace be written in the sky.
Let a second generation full of courage issue forth; let a people loving freedom come to growth.
Let a beauty full of healing and a strength of final clenching be the pulsing in our spirits and our blood. Let the martial songs be written.
Let the dirges disappear.
Let a race of men now rise and take control.

Habari Gani, HU Community?

As we close out 2022 and enter into this new season- let us reflect on how we are using our gifts to share our stories to keep our narrative alive.

How are you using your creativity to celebrate or help our community?

I'm so darn glad He let me try it again
'Cause my last time on earth, I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin'
'Til I reach my highest ground

To whom much is given, much is expected.

The third principle is Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) which is a commitment to active and informed togetherness on matters of common interest.

Today, as we practice Ujima, remember that we are not alone in the quest to do good and have to be responsible in using our gifts.

Habari gani? Kujichagulia!

The second principle of the Nguzo Saba is Kujichagulia (Self-Determination). It demands that we, as African people define, defend and develop ourselves instead of allowing or encouraging others to do this.

We celebrate Kujichagulia by standing firm in our morals and actively creating the change we want to see in the world.

How will you celebrate Kujichagulia today and in the new year?
