HUM District Music

This will be my 11th year as an independent voice teacher.

My first year, 2014, I was finishing up my master’s degree and teaching out of a rented space in Silver Spring.
2015-2019 I moved my studio to Cathedral Heights- I lived in the back and taught out of the front of a rented basement apartment. It was an adventure!
2019 I sold everything (except for my piano) and went completely virtual.
2020 I was teaching mostly virtual with occasional balcony lessons.
2021-now my husband and I bought our dream house in Columbia Heights to house our two children, two cats, two Airbnb guest rooms and of course, my students.

Every year I freak out... I consider getting a full time job in a school or I consider moving to a tiny home in the woods.

And every year the universe consistently knows better than me and the people who need me find me and we sing and grow and learn together.

This year I have daytime weekday lesson openings and a limited number of post-3pm lesson timeslots.

I love working with people who do their best (in the four agreements sense) though I’m impartial as to the number of years they’ve walked this current timeline (all ages welcome) nor their particular “talent” (because talent is BS.)

Singing is an athletic art and I love helping people sing comfortably and freely plus I’m really quite good at it. 🤟😎🌀

I’m directing the musical FINDING NEMO KIDS at Janney Elementary School- we opened last night and the show is sooooo delightful ( if I do say so myself. )

It is the annual 5th grade musical with 45 actors and the singing/costumes/set/choreography/concessions are perfect for any elementary aged kiddo (my husband is bringing my two pre-k kiddos today)

We still have a few tickets for our 2 pm matinee today and I figured with the rain I’d letcha know.

🍇 Living the low hanging fruit lifeeeeeeee

I was this positivity journaling this morning and wrote this: “your students arrive early to the studio and autonomously practice in the waiting room and then before their lesson time they knock on your door and come inside the upstairs studio to enjoy the presence of a regulated nervous system with whom they can hone the skills they wish to hone and pursue their inner artistry.”

This is my wish for the upcoming season at HUM. This is the success I’m seeking in my music studio.

5 things I learned from watching my son Asa’s swim lessons (that apply to music lessons)

1. Learning how your body works gives you confidence.

2. Learning how your body works in a stressful environment (like in water or on stage) gives you heaps and heaps of confidence.

3. A Master Teacher mixes levity in with frustrating learning (my son’s swimming teacher is a Master Teacher)

4. Seeing the pride my son has for himself after accomplishing something tricky in swim class is one of the most blissful parenting feelings I’ve experienced to date.

5. As a parent the relief I feel knowing that I can leave swim lessons to the Master Teacher is priceless.
