Special NAFSA dispatch from Iraq! Our executive director Dr. Fanta Aw has been the guest of the U.S. Embassy (Baghdad and Erbil), IREX, and Iraqi Higher Education this week, with whom she connected at .

She's met with high-level officials in the Prime Minister’s Office, the U.S. Embassy, American University Iraq-Baghdad, and the Ministry of Higher Education for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Their discussions have touched on capacity-building in higher education, student and faculty mobility, collaborative cross-border research, campus internationalization, workforce development and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

And of course, no visit would be complete without spending time with students! She enjoyed sharing her own story as an international student with a group of them in Baghdad and learning about their life experiences, dreams, and aspirations to study in the U.S.

As Dr. Aw expressed, "I am inspired by the work taking place here and the partnerships we are forging, reinforcing the value and impact of people-to-people exchange." She also recalled the quote by Ibn Battuta: “Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Follow Dr. Fanta Aw for more of her reflections.
