Are you as excited as we are about the Symposium on November 13th from 9:00-12:00pm?

Dr. David Kilpatrick will kick us off with a keynote entitled "How the Phonology of Speech Is Foundational for Instant Word Recognition."
He intends to share research supporting the foundational role phonemic proficiency plays in orthographic mapping, the subconscious process that occurs when a word's phonemes, spelling and meaning are 'bonded' in memory for instant, automatic recognition (Ehri, 2014).

He has shared the paper below from IDA's Perspectives (Summer 2020) as suggested pre-reading, and we expect his keynote will touch upon the research discussed in the article.

We invite you to read the paper in preparation for the keynote. Have questions? Add them to the comment section and we can ask Dr. Kilpatrick on the 13th.

NAEP ORF - Oral Reading Fluency Study 06/03/2021

In April 2021, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released the results of a 2018 study that examined fourth-grade students’ ability to read passages out loud with sufficient speed, accuracy, and expression, as well as foundational skills to gauge underlying sources of poor fluency.

According to NCES, "the ORF study shows that a significant percentage of fourth-grade students who perform below NAEP Basic, especially Black and Hispanic students, do not have adequate fluency, word reading, and phonological decoding skills..."

We have exciting news!

TRL has gifted us with two free tickets to their Spring Symposium! We will be doing a raffle so two of our followers can view the presentations for free. The winner of the tickets will be provided a code to access the videos.

How to enter: comment on this post with one thing related to the Science of Reading that you would like to learn or one event you would like to see TRL-DC host. For example, maybe you would like to learn more about the benefits of phonemic awareness or would like us to host a virtual book talk.

Those who comment will be added to the raffle. We are excited to hear from you.

Looking for help to determine if literacy instructional practices align with the Science of Reading? Look no further!

The Reading League recently published a curriculum evaluation tool to help teachers understand the strengths and weaknesses of their curricula.

The tool includes green and red flags for practices that do/do not align with the Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986) and Scarborough’s Rope (Scarborough, 2001).
