*MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY*

We know that Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy has been sanitized and whitewashed by mainstream America. Thankfully Black activists, artists, advocates, and scholars, continue to revive MLK’s true legacy as a revolutionary who believed in justice. Still coming into collective conscious is King’s Pan-Africanist politics & relationships. King traveled to various parts of the African Diaspora to connect with peoples of African descent and discuss Black futures.

*Check out these photos of MLK visiting the African Diaspora!*

Slide 2: MLK with Ghana’s First President, Kwame Nkrumah, at Ghana’s Independence Ceremony in Accra 1957.

Slide 3: MLK spent roughly 10 days on the island of Jamaica speaking at the University of West Indies, attending political dinners, and experiencing various parts of the country. He is known for saying he felt like a human being there!

Slide 4: MLK in Puerto Rico 1965 giving a speech against the Vietnam War at the Chapel of Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico with translator Reverend Dr. Justo Gonzalez.

Slide 5: MLK visited Bimini (Bahamian island) several times. In 1965 he wrote his Nobel Peace Prize speech & then in 1968 he wrote his last speech: I’ve been to the Mountain Top speech there.

On this day (Jan 3rd) in 1969 Shirley Anita St Hill Chisholm began her first term as the first Black.
Congresswoman!

*Although most sources say she was the first African American woman in Congress, Chisholm was actually the daughter of Caribbean immigrants from Guyana & Barbados.

*Chisholm served seven terms representing New York.

*Shirley Chisholm helped found the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971.

*She went on to become the first Black woman Presidential nominee in 1972.

We honor Shirley Chisholm on this day for taking and making space for Black women in politics & advocating for Black people, families & communities!

African American families gather to celebrate the first fruits through acknowledging the Nguzo Saba (7 principles); one principle per night by lighting the respective candle and reflecting on the principles’ meaning and relevance.
