In contrast to both educational and entertainment TV, background television was associated with decreased self-regulation, language, and literacy skills. Background TV can make children divide their attention between the stimuli in front of them and the TV.

[This post was based on a video abstract done on an article by Andrew D. Ribner, Rachel F. Barr, and Deborah L. Nichols titled “Background media use is negatively related to language and literacy skills: indirect effects of self-regulation.”]
