How did EMDR change the way you practice?

For so many clinicians, EMDR isn't just another psychotherapy; it's a shift in how you show up in the room. Less rigidity, and more trusting the process. Less searching for the right words, more making space for the client to open up.

If you're ready to build that foundation for your own practice, Basic: Part I begins this October. Link in bio to learn more.

Tell us in the comments: How has EMDR changed your practice?

What actually happens in Basic Training?

Swipe through to see how the foundation of EMDR is built, from understanding why it's such a comprehensive approach to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, to the three-pronged approach that guides every session: past, present, and future.

By the end, you'll walk away with tools to help clients be more present, effectively work through attachment wounds and trauma, and open up to the possibilities of the future.

Basic Training starts in October. Link in Bio to reserve your spot.

As therapists, it’s really easy to feel guilty for taking time for ourselves. We want to help and support our clients first, but this can often lead to neglecting our own self-care.

We forget that self-care isn’t separate from our role as a clinician; it’s part of it. A depleted nervous system can’t offer the same presence, attunement, or safety as a well-regulated one.

Swipe through for a full-body approach to self-care: mind, body, nervous system, & practice. It’s your duty as a therapist to bring your best self to the craft. Not to mention, that’s how you balance your life with the work you love.

What kind of self-care do you like to practice?

What does EMDR actually do in the brain?

We don’t know for sure, but we do know some things.

Swipe through to see what current research shows is happening in each region before and after EMDR.

Understanding what happens in the brain is important, but learning how to apply it is where you can make a difference. We offer EMDR trainings and consultations for clinicians ready to bring this work into their own practice.

Have you ever had a client dismiss EMDR therapy because they didn't think their experience was "traumatic enough"?

Francine Shapiro didn't design EMDR around how severe an event looks from the outside. She built it around the Adaptive Information Processing model: the theory about how the brain metabolizes experience.

A job layoff. A strained relationship. A chronic sense of not being good enough from growing up with a critical parent.

These are life experiences that can have a negative impact long after they happen.

It’s about the cumulative effect on self-esteem, our relationships with others, and our ability to regulate our emotions that often brings people to therapy in the first place.

EMDR is a truly integrative approach that addresses any difficulty based in memory, regardless of whether it’s a big “T” or little “t” memory. EMDR treats the full range of human experience, not just PTSD events.

Through our trainings, you’ll learn dual awareness, which is about holding space in the present while focusing on the past, allowing the client’s system to do now what it couldn’t do at the time so it can truly be over for the client.

If disturbing life experiences are still shaping how a client moves through the world, that's reason enough to process it. We’ll help you figure out how EMDR can be a good fit for your clients.

What is necessary to be a good therapist? Community.

As EMDR therapists, we hold so much space for our clients and their trauma, all while maintaining presence, attunement, and attention. We're the biggest advocates for self-care in our craft, yet often find it hard to make time for our own.

Self-care and support are just as important for us as they are for our clients. That's why we need community to bring our best selves to this work.

At The Center, our trainings and consultations are built to support you.

What actually creates the conditions for change to take place?

Deany Laliotis comes back to this question because it deserves to be asked again and again.

"I've worked with clinicians who have immaculate procedural knowledge and sit across clients who struggle with the reprocessing demands. The protocol was in the foreground. The relationship was in the background."

In our latest blog, Deany covers:

— What Relational EMDR Therapy® asks of us
— Why the therapeutic relationship itself is a clinical skill
— Why the self of the therapist is a clinical instrument, not a variable

In traditional EMDR, the goal is to stay out of the way and let whatever happens, happen. For clients with complex developmental trauma, that's not always enough.

Relational EMDR Therapy® fills that gap, using the relationship between therapist and client to co-create healing that's both reparative and corrective.

The shift: from surviving to thriving.

Nine of us enjoyed going to EMDRIA 2026, this year's conference on EMDR as an integrative psychotherapy.

It was a great experience to be with colleagues and friends for another year of sharing ideas and getting updates on research and clinical developments!

For some of our team, it was even the first time meeting in person. Between conversations at The Center's booth about our trainings and consultation, we found time to just talk. No agenda, no screen, just building memories.

Congratulations to our own Rachel Totten, who delivered her first conference workshop on "squeezing the adaptive juices" in Reevaluation.

You’ve probably heard it from a client.
Maybe a colleague.
Maybe you heard it before you were trained.

“Isn’t EMDR just about reliving the trauma?”

It is one of the most persistent misconceptions about this work, and it keeps people away from the healing they need.

Reprocessing is not reliving. It is a structured process, held within a strong therapeutic relationship, that allows the client’s system to bring resolution to painful memories so they can settle into the past where they belong.

If you’re an EMDR therapist looking to strengthen how you hold this work with your most complex clients, The Craft of EMDR Therapy: Taking it to the Next Level is designed for exactly this.
