We invite you to join us on Saturday, April 9th at 12:00pm in Washington, D.C. at the National Press Club to celebrate and honor the life and legacy of longtime CSB/SJU D.C. Chapter Alum, Johnnie, and journalist icon Al Eisele ’58 who has passed away at age 85.

Our entire Washington, D.C.-area community of Bennies and Johnnies express our deepest condolences to Al’s family, colleagues, and friends.

You can RSVP your in-person attendance directly by emailing: [email protected]

The event will be webcast and virtual details are forthcoming.

At the celebration event on the 9th, Denis McDonough '92 will offer remarks, and SJU Alumni Chaplain Timo Backous, OSB will provide a blessing.

Eisele '58 was the founding editor of The Hill who had a long and storied career in Washington, D.C. and mentored many young journalists along the way - putting into practice his strong Benedictine values.

During his early years in Washington, Eisele covered and got to know well two of Minnesota’s most prominent politicians, Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Sen. Eugene McCarthy '53 (D-Minn.).

In 1972, he published a dual biography of Humphrey and McCarthy titled “Almost to the Presidency.”

He also got to know then-Sen. Walter Mondale (D-Minn.), who started his Senate career in 1964. Mondale hired Eisele in 1976 to be his vice presidential press secretary, a position Eisele held until 1981, when President Carter left office after losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan.

As Sept. 11 approaches, we remember an American hero – Tom Burnett '85.

Burnett was one of the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark (New Jersey) to San Francisco when it was taken over by four hijackers as part of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. His heroic actions that day helped save the lives of countless others.
