Last month, the Biden administration took bold actions to tackle the $1.7 trillion student loan debt crisis by providing student debt cancellation. Although the Administration has not yet given guidance to borrowers on how to access these benefits, Here’s what we know so far:
The Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education, and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.
Additionally, The Biden administration is looking to create a student loan system more manageable for current and future borrowers. In summary, they are looking to:
Cut monthly payments in half for undergraduate loans.
Fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
Advance racial equity.
